Wirral is bursting with things to do, dog-friendly spots and lovely walks. It has everything from coastal views to woodland trails and open fields perfect for throwing a ball. So, take your pick and enjoy the outdoors. Here are great places to walk your dog in Wirral.
Royden Park, Frankby
- What type of walk? Woodland trails, open meadows, flat paths.
- What’s there? Cafes, toilets, a miniature railway, woodland and an open field.
- Dog suitability: Weekends here are busy but perfect for well-socialised dogs. Visit midweek for quieter walks.
- Is there parking? There is a car park, and parking charges apply.
This is a fantastic location for dog walks in Wirral. The park offers a variety of trails through woodlands, meadows, and heathland that are exciting for both dogs and their owners.
The park has deciduous and conifer woodlands, meadows, fishing grounds, and wetlands. Roodee Mere, one of the park’s highlights, contains water all year round and is accessible to the Association of Wirral Angling Clubs licence holders for fishing. It’s best to keep dogs on leads near the pond.
There is also a large open grass area where children can play freely, and families can enjoy a picnic, so just be mindful of others when letting your dog run off steam!
Wirral Model Engineering Society run a miniature railway in this park too. One of my best childhood memories is riding this train! Keep an eye on their Facebook page for running dates. Art and craft fairs are also held during selected weekends, so check the notice boards when you visit.
Royden Park, Frankby, Wirral CH48 1NP
The Courtyard Cafe in Royden Park is dog-friendly
Stop by the Courtyard Cafe, an outdoor cafe serving hot and cold drinks, sandwiches, pastries, cakes, ice cream, and more for a drink or a snack. We love grabbing a hot chocolate from here before an Autumn woodland walk.
For mid-walk refreshments, we like visiting Benty Farm Tearooms. Benty Farm is a small farmstead in an isolated location on Thurstaston Common. They host pick-your-own events too.
Extend your walk from Royden Park
If you feel like stretching your legs a little further, you can extend your walk towards Thurstaston Common. This part of the walk feels more open and exposed, which is a lovely contrast to the woodland in Royden Park. On a clear day, the views across the Dee Estuary are beautiful.
In the woods at Thurstaston Common, you will find Thor’s Rock, a large red sandstone outcrop that has fascinated visitors for many years. It feels special when you reach it, especially if you are with children or dogs who enjoy exploring.
The Marine Lake, West Kirby
- What type of walk? Flat, pathway, promenade, coastal views.
- What’s there? Cafes and restaurants are nearby, as well as toilets and a beach.
- Dog suitability: Popular with other dogs and people, so perfect for social dogs. It’s quieter in the early mornings and midweek.
- Is there parking? There is free parking along the promenade and a nearby car park with parking charges.
Head to Marine Lake in West Kirby for a flat, easy circular dog walk in Wirral. The lake covers 52 acres and is surrounded by a beautiful promenade.
The walk around the lake is around 2.3 km and takes under 30 minutes. It’s one of my favourites for both accessibility and views. You have the lake on one side and the beach/Welsh mountains in the distance on the other; it’s just gorgeous! Arlo clearly loves it too.
You can participate in various water activities like sailing, windsurfing, kayaking, and paddleboarding – dogs welcome to join, we have seen a few on paddle boards. However, if you prefer to stay on land, there are plenty of benches to relax and take in the stunning views of North Wales.
West Kirby Marine Lake, Wirral CH48 0QG
Dog-friendly restaurants and cafes in West Kirby
One of the reasons I love walking around the Marine Lake is how easy it is to turn it into a slow, social wander with a stop for food or a drink afterwards. West Kirby is full of dog-friendly places, so you never feel rushed to head straight home once the walk is done.
I stop at Little Eye Coffee way more than my bank balance likes. But if you are after good coffee and both delicious and nourishing food, you should give it a try. It’s relaxed, welcoming, and they’re happy for dogs to join you, which makes it perfect after a loop of the lake or a walk along the beach. The tuna sandwich here is my personal favourite item on the menu.
If we’re walking later in the day or meeting friends, The West Kirby Tap is another spot we visit regularly. It has a laid-back feel and is well known locally for being dog-friendly. P.S. The pizzas here are top-notch.
Extend your walk
To extend your walk, you can head towards Caldy Beach and Cubbin’s Green, which feels a bit quieter and more open compared to the busier areas around the Marine Lake. It’s a lovely stretch if you want a more relaxed pace and a bit of space.
Alternatively, let your dog run on West Kirby Beach and then follow the coastline round to Red Rocks. This route is easy to follow and gives you some really nice views along the way, especially on a clear day.
New Brighton Beach, Wallasey
- What type of walk? Flat, promenade, sand, coastal views.
- What’s there? Cafes and restaurants are nearby, as well as a beach.
- Dog suitability: Great for energetic and social dogs. Quieter early mornings and outside peak times.
- Is there parking? Free parking along the promenade and a free car park.
We love New Brighton Beach in Wallasey; it is a fantastic place to take your dog for a walk. This beautiful beach is one of the most dog-friendly spots in the Wirral, with a vast stretch of sand where your dog can run and play. If your dog loves the sea, they can dip and splash around in the water (just be cautious of jellyfish!).
There’s also the option to stick to the promenade if you’d rather avoid the sand. It’s flat, easy to walk, and perfect if you want a steadier route while still enjoying the coastal views.
The Promenade, New Brighton, Wallasey CH45 2NW
Marino Lounge in New Brighton is dog-friendly
After a fun-filled day at the beach with your dog, there are many cafes and pubs nearby where you can grab a bite to eat or a refreshing drink.
Our favourite is Marino Lounge, which is laid-back and serves excellent brunch dishes. The staff are friendly, and there are always colouring books, games, and toys for little ones to keep them entertained while you relax.
Extend this walk
If you want to turn this into a longer coastal walk, you can follow the promenade north towards Leasowe Bay. This stretch of coastline is flat and easy to follow, making it ideal if you want to add a few extra miles.
Walking towards Leasowe gives you wider coastal views and a quieter feel, especially outside peak times. It’s a great option if your dog enjoys longer, steadier walks and you want to escape the busier sections of the promenade.
Wirral Country Park, Thurstaston
- What type of walk? Park, grass, coastal path, sandy beach, coastal views.
- What’s there? A cafe nearby, and a beach.
- Dog suitability: Popular with off-lead dogs. Great for confident, social dogs.
- Is there parking? There is a large car park, and parking charges apply.
Wirral Country Park is a beautiful parkland with woodland, ample grassy areas, and picnic areas. It is a popular spot for dog walkers. You may encounter many people and dogs off leads, which can be great for socialising with your furry friend in a relaxed environment with limited roads.
Thurstaston Beach is also lovely to visit with your dog. Just always check tide times to avoid being caught by rising water. Also, be aware that the sand can become very thick and muddy here, so be mindful of your dog to avoid them and yourself getting stuck.
Wirral Country Park, Thurstaston, Wirral CH61 0HN
Flissy’s Coffee Shop in Thurstaston is dog-friendly
If you’re looking for refreshments, Flissy’s Coffee Shop is next to the park’s car park, just off the Wirral Way. They offer a diverse menu with options for everyone, including kids and dogs. Their vegan and vegetarian dishes are unique, and they feature a wide range of gluten-free treats.
I love their vibrant outdoor seating area, perfect for relaxing in the sun. The staff are friendly and welcoming, and the food is consistently well-presented and delicious.
How to extend this walk
If you’d like to make this walk longer, you can follow the Wirral Way from Wirral Country Park towards West Kirby. It’s a flat, well-maintained route that runs alongside the coast, making it ideal if you want to keep things easy while still enjoying the views.
Also, if you’re still training your dog off the lead, there are a few large fields near the car park where you can use a long-line lead.
Hoylake Beach, Hoylake
- What type of walk? Promenade, sandy beach, coastal views.
- What’s there? Cafes, restaurants and a beach.
- Dog suitability: Loads of beach space, so great for all types of dogs.
- Is there parking? Free parking along the promenade.
Of course, I have to include Hoylake. It’s home for me, and my go-to spot for a beach walk with my Auntie’s dog, especially in the summer. The sunsets here are spectacular. The sun drops right into the water in the distance, and on a clear evening, it’s honestly one of the best views in Wirral.
One of the best things about Hoylake Beach is how much space there is. When the tide is out, it opens up into a huge stretch of sand, which is perfect for longer walks and letting your dog run properly.
It works well for all dogs too, whether you’ve got one that loves charging around on the beach or you’re after something a bit more relaxed.
The promenade is long and easy to follow, so it’s a great option if you want a steadier walk without going onto the sand. If you’re nearby, it’s well worth timing your walk for sunset; it makes the whole thing feel a bit special.
Hoylake Beach, Wirral CH47 3AL
Map Coffee & Lounge in Hoylake is dog-friendly
One of Hoylake’s newest little cafes, Map Coffee & Lounge, is lovely. The coffee is fantastic, and they also serve cakes, breakfast, lunch, and evening meals. We have visited a few times with a dog, and the owners are very friendly and a pleasure to speak with. Check it out if you’re in the area.
How to extend this walk
If you want to make this walk longer, you can walk along the beach via Red Rocks until you reach West Kirby. It’s an easy route with stunning views out to Hilbre Island.
This stretch works well for all dogs. You can turn back whenever it suits you or continue into West Kirby for a longer outing and a stop for food or a drink before heading home.
Bidston Hill, Bidston
- What type of walk? Woodland, field, some uphill paths.
- What’s there? Bidston Hill Windmill, Tam O’Shanter farm and cafe are nearby.
- Dog suitability: Best for confident dogs that enjoy exploring. Some uneven and uphill paths.
- Is there parking? Car park and roadside parking nearby.
I think Bidston Hill is a great place for walking dogs in Wirral, with a mix of woodland paths and open fields that make it ideal for exploring. There are plenty of different routes, so you can switch it up each time you visit, and it never really feels the same twice.
It’s a good option if your dog enjoys a bit of variety and doesn’t mind uneven ground, since some paths are rocky and slightly hilly. You’ll also find lots of quieter side paths through the trees, which are perfect for a more relaxed wander.
From the top, you get some great views across Liverpool and the Wirral, along with the windmill, which makes a lovely photo spot. Dogs tend to love it here, especially if they enjoy weaving through trees and exploring more rugged terrain.
Bidston Hill, Birkenhead, Prenton CH43 7FE
Tam O’Shanter Farm nearby allows dogs on leads
I have been visiting the Tam O’Shanter farm since I was very young, and it has always been a lovely way to spend the day with family. It’s still a free farm to visit and a great addition to a day out. They are dog-friendly; just keep your dog on a lead when visiting, and be mindful of the animals.
A charitable trust runs the farm, which provides kids and adults with an enjoyable and educational experience. The farm also features an on-site cafe and two play areas to entertain children.
Walk part of the Wirral Way with your dog
The Wirral Way is a trail that follows the path of an old railway line, running from West Kirby to Hooton along the River Dee. With lovely views across to the Welsh coastline, it’s a popular route for both walkers and cyclists (it forms part of National Cycle Route 56).
Along the way, you’ll pass through several towns with plenty of cafés and pubs where you can stop for a break. The full route from Ashton Park in West Kirby to Hooton is around 12.2 miles, but there are lots of shorter sections you can enjoy if you don’t fancy doing it all in one go.
