1. Get creative at The Potting Shed, Hoylake
We love to get creative all year, but there’s something so cosy about painting in the winter. The Potting Shed in Hoylake is the perfect spot to enjoy a few hours of pottery painting.
The staff here are engaging and helpful, and they always make our visits enjoyable. It’s family-friendly, and they have loads of pottery options catered to each season, including Christmas plates, Halloween bowls, and more!
Plus, there’s a cosy café inside where you can relax and refuel while you paint. It’s a lovely way to craft something special or personalise a special gift for a loved one.

2. See a show at the Floral Pavilion Theatre, New Brighton
The Floral Pavilion Theatre in New Brighton offers a variety of exciting shows, events, and performances. We’ve attended numerous shows here and have always had a fantastic experience. It’s a smaller venue, which is great for taking children and introducing them to the magic of the stage. Each winter, they host Christmas events and a panto.

3. Visit the Williamson Art Gallery, Birkenhead
The Williamson Art Gallery & Museum welcomed its first visitors in 1928, made possible by the generous contributions of John and Patrick Williamson, who supported the establishment through the Birkenhead Borough Council. The gallery features many artworks, ceramics, sculptures, and exhibits on maritime history. Best of all, admission is free.

4. Enjoy a day out at New Brighton
My family and I enjoy our trips to New Brighton because there’s always so much to do indoors or outdoors. When we visit in the winter, we enjoy bowling at Riverside Bowling Alley or watching a movie at the Light Cinema. We always have a great time exploring the traditional arcades as well. With various dining and drinking options, it’s the perfect place for a full day of fun. Our top choice for a meal is Marino Lounge; it’s dog-friendly, has a relaxed vibe, and its brunch menu is fantastic.

5. Visit Eureka! Science and Discovery, Seacombe
Seacombe is now home to Eureka! Science and Discovery. It’s indoors and a great place to spend some time in the winter if you’re stuck for ideas. This engaging venue explores how science, technology, engineering, the arts, and mathematics influence our daily lives, connecting visitors with the extraordinary. The venue hosts events, themed days, and a Christmas show, too.
If you’re planning a trip that includes the Ferry, it’s a fantastic way to turn your day into an adventure. It’s especially suitable for children aged 14 and under.

6. Treat yourself to a proper Sunday roast
Wirral has many restaurants offering diverse cuisines to cater to every palate, from traditional pub-style food to international flavours.
For a top Sunday roast, The Ship Inn is fantastic. The menu primarily features classic pub food, such as burgers, sandwiches, fish and chips, and a range of vegetarian and vegan options. You can also indulge in their excellent selection of small plates. This is one of our favourite spots in Hoylake.

8. Warm up in the pub after a walk
The Wirral has some fantastic pubs. One of our favourites has to be The Black Toad in Hoylake. It’s a really welcoming little spot, perfect for warming up after a walk along Hoylake Promenade.
Michelle and Robin, the owners, opened this craft beer micropub and bottle shop on Market Street in Wirral in July 2019. They take great pride in their extensive selection of local beers, with 90% of their offerings coming from the area.
When the weather permits, there’s plenty of outdoor seating, and their snack menu is the best in Wirral. They keep me supplied with pretzels.
