My review of The Ship Inn’s Sunday roast, Hoylake

Okay, there is one thing I love more than a Sunday roast: a Sunday roast at a pub or restaurant, so I don’t have to clean up! Here’s my review of The Ship Inn’s Sunday roast, Hoylake.

I love a Sunday roast; it’s comfort on a plate. The Ship Inn is packed every Sunday with families lapping up this English tradition, and I just had to see what all the fuss was about. Here’s my review of The Ship Inn’s Sunday roast, Hoylake.

The Ship Inn is a lovely welcoming pub

We love The Ship Inn and visit regularly with friends and family. It is a cosy and welcoming spot; you can enjoy various drinks, such as real ales, lagers, wines, spirits, and non-alcoholic options. Their menu offers classic pub food, like burgers, sandwiches, fish and chips, and vegetarian and vegan options. They welcome children and dogs, too, so it’s perfect for a family meal after a walk.

It’s also a popular destination thanks to its friendly staff and regular events, such as live music and quiz nights. The outdoor seating areas are perfect for unwinding and soaking up some sun during the warmer months.

We tried their Sunday Social roast dinner menu. It was so great that I thought it would be helpful to review it!

The Ship Inn’s Sunday Social

The Sunday Social menu offers loads of choices. On our visit, the starters were a creamy soup of the season, delicious smoked haddock fishcake, and rich chicken liver pâté. All sounded great, but we saved our appetite for the main event!

Plenty of mains options are available to suit all tastes. When we visited, you could choose roast chicken with apple and pork stuffing wrapped in bacon, roast lamb shoulder with rosemary, thyme, and garlic, roast topside of beef, or slow-roasted gammon with clementine and ginger. If you’re a vegetarian, handcrafted nut roast is an excellent option.

Handmade sausage stuffing in pancetta, seasoned roast potatoes, pigs in blankets, mixed seasonal vegetables, homemade Yorkshire pudding, and house gravy accompany all mains. You could add extra sides, such as cauliflower cheese or pigs in maple glaze, honey, whole grain parsnips, or sautéed sprouts. We recommend cauliflower cheese. I’m still dreaming about it!

We chose the Sunday roast sharer for two

Of course, we wanted to try a little bit of everything. We were hungry and opted for the Sunday roast sharer for two. When it arrived, it was huge!

The roast beef was perfectly cooked, with just the right amount of pink in the middle. It was served with crispy roast potatoes, fluffy Yorkshire pudding, stuffing, pigs in blankets and various seasonal vegetables. The gravy was rich and flavourful, and the entire plate was delicious and comforting.

We loved our Sunday lunch at The Ship Inn Hoylake.

The staff were friendly and attentive, and the service was excellent throughout the meal. The dessert selection was also impressive, and I couldn’t resist trying the sticky toffee pudding, which was the perfect sweet ending.

We’re still full now, but this is a lovely way to spend a Sunday with friends and family. We suggest booking in advance to save disappointment as it can get busy.

Overall, I highly recommend The Ship Inn to anyone looking for a delicious Sunday roast dinner in a welcoming and cosy atmosphere. Click here for more of Hoylake’s fabulous pubs.
