Our visit to Eureka! Science + Discovery, Wirral

A fantastic day out for families, curious minds and anyone learning through hands-on experiences.

I was looking for a museum in Wirral that would inspire my 8-year-old son and Eureka! Science + Discovery immediately caught my eye. Eureka! is active on social media and regularly hosts events and activities that make learning an adventure. Also, full-price admission gets you an annual pass, which is unbelievable value for money. We decided to check it out, and we loved it! This interactive, hands-on museum truly brings science to life in a fun way. From engaging exhibits to thought-provoking challenges, there’s so much to explore.

Our visit to Eureka! Science + Discovery Museum, Wirral

Eureka! Science + Discovery is tailored for children and young people up to 14 years old, allowing them to explore how Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) play a role in their lives.

Mersey Ferries terminal outside the museum. Seacombe Ferry Terminal.

Parking

When we arrived, plenty of parking was next to the Seacombe Ferry Terminal. It’s pay-and-display, and £3.25 got us three hours. If you are visiting from Liverpool, you can jump on the ferry and get off at Seacombe. This is a lovely way to make a day out of a visit to the museum.

Ticket prices

Ticket prices for us were £15.95 per adult and £15.95 per 3+child; children under 1 are free. As I mentioned, full-price ticket entry entitles you to an annual pass, so pay once and visit as many times as you’d like for a whole year.

We visited Eureka! on a Saturday

We visited on a Saturday and expected it to be busy. Surprisingly, it was not overcrowded because they have a system that allows you to book a time slot before attending.

There was plenty of space for everyone to enjoy the museum’s activities and get involved without constantly queueing. I loved this because it meant each section captivated and held my son’s attention, and he could naturally move from one activity to the next.

We were greeted with an exciting atmosphere as soon as we entered the museum. The space is bright and open. The staff explained that the museum is split into sections. ‘Bodies’, ‘Homes’, and ‘Nature’, and the activity in the ‘Make Create’ space that weekend was story jars.

Eureka! Science + Discovery, a hands-on museum

What I loved most about Eureka! Science + Discovery is that it’s highly interactive. Gone are the days of just reading a plaque and moving on – here, you get to engage.

From experimenting with water currents to manipulating light and sound, the exhibits are designed to let visitors test their theories, make observations, and, most importantly, have fun.

Hands-on nature section in Eureka science museum in Wirral.

We began exploring the museum upstairs in the ‘Nature’ section, my son’s favourite area. He let off some steam in the climbing area and loved figuring out food chains and learning about what the environment can teach us about ourselves, our purpose, and our connections to each other.

I found the ‘Home’ section interesting and easy to spend a lot of time in. I certainly learnt a lot about our home, which we overlook daily! My son loved inventing his own home designs. The museum’s layout flows well, allowing you to explore the space freely and at your own pace.

The 'Bodies' section at Eureka!

The ‘Bodies’ section was the most popular of the day, so we left it till last and probably spent most of our time there. My son loved how physically involved he could be with the exhibits here while learning about the human body’s complexity and beauty.

We spent just over 2 hours exploring the museum, but we could have easily spent more time there, especially if we had younger children and could have used The Burrow.

For those with younger children, there’s also a dedicated area where the little ones can explore, play, and discover age-appropriate activities that foster their early learning. Eureka! caters to all ages and makes sure that everyone can engage in some form of scientific discovery.

Facilities at Eureka! Science + Discovery

The museum offers accessible features for all guests, including baby-changing facilities, sensory bags and wheelchair access. Accessibility details are available here.

We visited the Discovery Cafe afterwards to unwind and chat about all the new things we had learned. It was heartwarming to see how much fun everyone had, not just the kids but adults as well. The cafe is located in the Seacombe Ferry terminal and offers visitors various light lunch options and teatime favourites. Vegan and gluten-free alternatives are available.

Overall, we can’t recommend Eureka! Science + Discovery enough. It’s a great way to spend quality time with children and would be ideal if you homeschool, too. We are excited to make the most of our annual pass and attend their workshops and special events throughout the year. Whether you’re looking for a fun family day out, an exciting educational experience, or just a place to spark your own scientific curiosity, Eureka! is definitely worth the visit.
