Commonwood Leisure, camping and fishing review

Here’s my honest review of Commonwood Leisure in Wrexham for camping and fishing with an 8-year-old.

Since my son developed a passion for fishing, we’ve discovered that Commonwood Leisure in Wrexham, just a short drive from the Wirral, has become our ideal weekend getaway. Commonwood Leisure is an award-winning campsite and fishery that we’ve been visiting for several years. It combines everything my family loves: camping, fishing, and, of course, pizza! Here’s why we keep booking to go back.

What is Commonwood Leisure?

Commonwood Leisure is a glamping and camping site in Wrexham. The site boasts fishing lakes suitable for all skill levels, as well as children’s pools. Even if fishing isn’t your thing, there are plenty of things to do here, such as enjoying live music at the bar or taking a dip in the wild swimming pool.

The on-site Acorn Pizzeria, café and bar are excellent, offering a variety of tasty food, drinks and fantastic pizzas. There is even a small playground for the kids and plenty of outdoor seating.

Commonwood Leisure is roughly 50 minutes from Hoylake, Wirral

One of the best things for us about Commonwood Leisure is how close it is to home.

We love loading up the campervan for a weekend getaway. Living in Wirral means plenty of great camping spots within easy reach. Commonwood Leisure is our go-to when we’re in the mood for a weekend camping trip, especially when my son wants to spend some time fishing. It’s only a 40-50 minute drive from Hoylake.

The site is located just outside Wrexham, a short drive from the city centre, so it’s not too far from local amenities but still feels far enough to give that true “getaway” feeling.

Family-friendly camping

You can choose to stay in a lodge, park your caravan or bring your camper like us. Commonwood has a variety of spacious and well-maintained pitches, which makes setting up for the weekend easy and stress-free.

The pitches on the site are generous in size. We love that many of them come with fire pits or BBQ areas, where you can cook outdoors or toast marshmallows.

One thing that always stands out is how well-kept and clean everything is. The restrooms, showers, and washing-up areas are basic but spotlessly clean and perfectly adequate. During peak season, portaloos are placed around the site for convenience.

Although it’s popular, Commonwood Leisure still retains a laid-back and serene atmosphere. It strikes a balance between providing enough privacy and space for relaxation while also offering a sociable and friendly atmosphere.

This is their premier specimen Carp lake, covering 3 acres. It has six gravelled swims. The lake bottom is predominantly clay. Stocked initially with 50 Carp weighing over 20lbs, it now has fish that weigh up to 40lbs. The current lake record is 41lb 3oz!

Llewelyn

The premier Carp “runs” water is more challenging to fish, yet more rewarding! It is 2.5 acres in size, and there is a good amount of Carp and a good head of fish, all over 20 lbs and many over 25 lbs. The current lake record is 32-lb Common Carp. There are six gravelled swims here. The lake bottom is clay throughout.

  • No under-18s.

Weston

Weston is very well stocked and has an array of Carp weighing 14-18lb, right the way through to 26lb. The lake has a clay bottom and few features. This is an excellent lake for practising and getting to grips with Carp fishing.

  • No guests during the night.
  • No children under the age of 16.

Brecon

This is a dedicated Catfish lake with Catfish that average 15-20lb, with several over 30lb, and the largest being a huge 65lb. This is a reed-lined lake with a clay bottom, making for easy presentation for all hook baits.

Glyndwr

Glyndwr is a popular match and pleasure lake that features a mix of coarse fish. The average size Carp in here is 6-7lb, and there is a good stock of Bream, Specimen Roach and Perch to target throughout the year. Glyndwr is a lake explicitly designed for match fishing, featuring a total of 18 pegs.

  • Children are allowed at this lake, and those under 10 are free.

Tryfan

Tryfan is an excellent lake for match fishing and is the dedicated Carp match pool with 22 pegs, each with its own unique feature. The Carp average around 4-5lb and go up to 10lb+.

  • Children are allowed at this lake, and those under 10 are free.

Gelert

(The most overlooked pool!)

This is their canal pool with 20 pegs spaced out well. The pool is stocked with a good variety of course fish. The Carp average 3-4lb and go up to 8lb. It sits alongside touring pitches, so it is perfect to park up next to and get fishing.

Children are also welcome to come and fish in the children’s pools located near the café; you need to bring your own equipment. They are stocked well with small carp.

We have stayed on various pitches at Commonwood Leisure

We have set up on an electric pitch right by the canal, named Gelert, which was perfect for us. It allowed us to relax on the peg in front of our campervan and fish for hours on end! We managed to reel in quite a few Common and Mirror Carp, and our little one proudly caught a couple of Roach all on his own.

The electric pitches near the canal are just a short stroll away from the showers, toilets, and Acorn Pizzeria Bar, which was convenient. The food there was just what you wanted when camping; we enjoyed both their breakfast and lunch selections. Everything we ordered was reasonably priced.

We have also stayed on the pitches next to the swimming lake quite a few times. We love this peaceful area, and my son particularly enjoys paddleboarding on the swimming lake. They are dog-friendly too!

We find ourselves coming back repeatedly because the site is impeccably maintained. My son particularly enjoys learning to fish here, and the staff are always friendly and welcoming. The bar and food are fantastic, and there are also play areas for the kids. It truly has everything you could want, all while retaining a lovely, wild and rural atmosphere. We can’t recommend Commonwood highly enough!
